From 1949 by BrentI am a Brain Injury Survivor. I was in an Automobile Accident when I was four years of age, that was in 1949. I was unconscious for a month. It affected my left side, as I was originally left handed, and had to learn how to do everything with my right hand. It all started out on a Sunday morning after I got home from church. There was a golf course that was near to our house and my brother and I went to look for stray golf balls. There was a busy road that we had to cross first, since being only four years old at the time, I do not really remember much, only what I was told. My parents and brother are now deceased so they can not tell me anything anymore. It affected my whole family, not just me, and back then they did not have all the wonderful things that people who survive with brain Injuries have access to now. We did not have all the support groups, and all the new medical breakthroughs. I imagine that I had extensive therapies. I have come a long way since then and as I say a lot of water has gone under the bridge. I still have short and long term memory problems. I remember peoples faces, but as far as their names are concerned they do not stick. I also have Epilepsy which I take medicine for, but its a silent thing as I could have one at any time, even though they are pretty well controlled. There are things that trigger them and I know it when one is coming. I can't tell you much about my TBI injury as the people that meant the most to me, both my Mother, Father and Brother are deceased. This is also a hard thing to deal with, but I am dealing with it the best way that I can, one day at a time. I almost forgot to introduce myself, my name is Brent. I live in the state of Florida, but I was born in Pennsylvania. I do live independently. P.S. Hoping to hear from other TBI survivors, and your stories. To email me, click here.
