Through the Hoops of Survival

Heather's Tale

I was coming home from dropping all my friends off after we went to a movie and had some pizza.  I was living in Kentucky at the time, and in Kentucky their back roads are very narrow.  I went around a corner and some guy was too close for comfort so I jerked back and my wheels went off the side of the road, and instead of letting it ride off, I jerked back and flipped over four times.

When the ambulance picked me up, my left leg was in the steering wheel, my right leg was in the passenger seat, and from my waist up- I was in the back seat, and my head was smashed in the back window.

They called the Jaws of Life, but didn't have enough time so the ambulance crew crawled into my Jeep and got me out.  By the way I was pronounced dead at the scene, so that's why had to get me out quickly.  By the grace of God, there was a doctor that just decided to ride in the ambulance that night, who put my trach in. He probably saved my life.

I went straight to the hospital where they operated on me for over 16 hours.   I was in a coma for five months, my heart stopped two times for about three minutes.  And now they call me a miracle child.

I am 24 now almost 25, will be in June.  I was in the Tenth grade, in High School when my accident happened.  Just turned sweet 16.  I was real popular. I dated allot, but no one in particular.  Although I am still friends with all of them.   I played in the school band, played the saxophone.  I was the starting center on the girls basketball team.

I was a real big ball star in Kentucky, so I was on the news four times and in the paper five times.  The day after my accident Duke University called and offered me a full scholarship to play ball.  Major Bummer eh?

I am pretty much the same person now as I was then (before my accident.)  I am real wild, love to laugh, love to go out with friends, love to dance, and love to talk. Except for my tbi, and the two years I can not remember, I am still me.  Although I still had two more years of school to go, I knew I wanted to go to college and be a teacher and coach basketball.

The hardest thing for me now is not being able to play ball full time, although I am on the city team.

The thing I most remember about playing ball was being absolutely free.  I as no one on the court.  I felt at peace almost.  (geez, I am blushing)   I miss having that freedom. Now its hard enough to remember who has the ball.

I thank God everyday for saving my life, but it would have been nice to know how it felt to be the starting line-up for the Duke Girl's Basketball Team, ya' know?  Go Blue Devils***  Peace y'all and always my love....

HEATHER ROBIN KREBS

A funny tale from Heather

About two years after my car accident, four of  my good friends and I went to the movies.  I was not driving yet so my Mom said she would pick us up after the movie, just give her a call when we were ready.  Well, the movie was funny.

So  I went outside and called my Mom and said we were ready to be picked up, she said she was on her way.  Figuring she would be a few minutes my friends and I went back inside and got something to drink.  After we were done, I said I bet my Mom is here, so we went out side, and as soon as I walked out there was my Mom.  I screamed 'Hey," and she stopped.

I opened the back door for three of my friends to get in the back seat, then I got in the front seat, and let in my other friend beside me.  But when I turned, it wasn't my Mom, it was some black-haired man that I didn't even know.  I got in the wrong car!!!!!!  The man turned to me and said, "Ma'am, I think you have the wrong car"!!!!

All five of us jumped out real quick, I was flabbergasted, to put it mildly.  What is even funnier is that my Mom saw the whole thing.  She was right behind the guy, and saw all of us get in the car!!!!!

Sometimes we can have fun!
