Making Accessibility Real: Guidelines for Meetings, Conferences and Gatherings

"There are some things you don't have to know how it works - only that it works. While some people are studying the roots, others are picking the fruit. It just depends on which end of this you want to get in on." -Jim Rohn

Welcome to our Brain Injury Support Website

Ed Crinnion at a recent Peer Support group Meeting in Monroeville, PA, USA.

The Pittsburgh Area Brain Injury Alliance has been around for about 25 years. If we have our way, we are here to stay. We have established new support groups in this area, developed tools for all groups to use and have even created some email support groups. Our expansion has blossomed to include tax-exempt status. While this important step is not yet finalized, we are moving steadily in this direction. Visit this site often for more information.

Relax with us as you browse the pages of our brain injury support site.  You can use the links in the left margin of each page to locate specific information within this tbi website. You will find links to all of this brain injury site's main pages there.  Our Navigation Page/Site Map contains links to every page in our site. If you are returning to visit a particular page, you can be sure to find a link to it there.

We may not have all of the answers that you need about head injury and brain trauma, however, we hope that we can help you to find the answers. We have linked to many other Brain Injury related sites to give you current, up to date Head Injury and Brain Trauma information and resources.

If you need up-to-date information about issues pertaining to Acquired Brain Injury, Head injury and Peer-to-Peer Support, we may be able to help you.

Email us your comments! Click here to send us an email message with your comments.

This Brain Injury Alliance site is designed to be easy to navigate. Please report any broken links or difficulty in navigation to us and we will address any concerns as soon as possible.

Visit our support group schedule, archives and read our developing History Page. We have provided an email sign-up for TBI support group meeting notifications, and our  brain injury "Support Lines" email newsletter or electronic magazine (ezine.) If you are a parent looking for information about education alternatives for your child living with brain injury, please visit our Education page.

All over the world

Paul Damon at a recent peer support group meeting.People sustain brain injuries every day. Statistics vary, yet the number of reported cases of acquired head injury and brain trauma is staggering. Some people survive tbi while others die. For many of the tbi survivors, life is never the same again (for them or for the people in their lives.)

We emphasize self-empowerment through acquiring accurate, up to date information pertaining to brain injury issues. We promote brain injury prevention education, gaining understanding about tbi, taking action, support group development, and personal involvement.

Self-determination, perseverance and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances and situations gives strength to the people who experience brain injury. Every person alive is at risk. Regardless of social status, economic conditions, education, race, religious affiliation, male or female, young or not, brain injury happens! No one is immune. The only cure right now is prevention.

Jump right in. Let us know what you want to see if it is not here.

This brain injury peer support site is evolving. As time permits, we will modify and expand it to better serve you. We want to meet the needs of the people who are recovering from traumatic brain injury. Please point out any errors or broken links so that we can make corrections as needed. Email Webmaster to report any problems.

Operation: Empowerment is not dead. Thank you Andrea.

PABIA Purpose Statement

The Pittsburgh Area Brain Injury Alliance (PABIA) is dedicated to the PEOPLE recovering from Brain Injury and who live with the consequences of Traumatic Brain Injury. Our purpose is to provide a forum for peer-to-peer support and to assist in the development of peer-to-peer support groups in Western Pennsylvania.

We focus on overcoming barriers to our full participation in society. We have adopted a 'No Victim' approach to our TBI recovery.  We rise above recovery obstacles and are becoming barrier free. We encourage self-empowerment through education and awareness and self-determination.

Whether you have sustained a brain trauma or if your loved one has acquired brain injury, we aim to provide a forum for TBI peer support, advocacy, education, Brain Injury prevention and sometimes a shoulder to lean on.

Peer Support services are provided by persons with disabilities and/or family members who are or have been consumers of medical and/or rehabilitation services. This may involve assistance with more effectively accessing and utilizing the medical and/or rehabilitation service delivery system including,

  • identifying needs,
  • finding available funding,
  • accessing supports,
  • partnering with persons working in professional disciplines,
  • and overcoming service barriers.

Persons with disabilities share understanding and may aid others in coping with the stressors of the disability through meetings with other people affected by similar disability.

We are not vegetables, we are people. We are human beings entitled to equal rights with all American citizens, regardless of our abilities.
